What People Do for Carnival - Practicing Present Continuous


A.    What springs to mind when you hear the word carnival?
 Do you like Carnival? Why (not)?
What do people usually think about carnival in Brazil? Are there any misconceptions?
What would be some difficulties a foreigner would face when spending carnival in Brazil?
    Where is the best carnival in the world? Why?
    What do you know about Carnival in other countries?
    What are the best and the worst things about carnival?

B.    Watch a movie scene from the movie Rio and check if you mentioned any of the things that happens to the American lady during the Samba parade.


C.     Use the verbs below to write sentences about who is doing what in the scene.
eg. The dog is running.

Present continuous

1. What do we usually see in the street? Watch the video segment and check if anything of what you said appears in the movie. 

2. Check the sentences that are true.
In the scene, the cars are moving.
The man in a suit is talking to his audience.
The boys are running.
The girl is eating.
The old lady is crossing the street. 
The cars are honking.
People are swearing. 

3. Get a blank piece of paper and write as many true sentences about what happens in the scene  as you can remember.

Writing Cards

Do you usually write greeting cards?
Have you ever seen a funny/silly card?
What are the cards like in your country?
How easy/difficult for you is writing a card?
Do you like getting cards?


2. The guy in the movie wants to write a card to say congrats. What can he write? Watch the movie and check. Which one do you like most? What idea did he have for a love card?


3. Which idea did you like most?  What is the next holiday in your country? Who would you write a card to?
4. Get in groups and think of ways to express your feelings.Use the web to see how people greet one another on special occasions. Use kizoa or hugelab to write your card and send it to someone in class.
