My students were having a hard time remembering all the phrasal verbs in the unit, so I started the lesson by telling them two short stories.
I have not been a brilliant math student, but my father was always teaching me some strategies to help me learn. It was really important for me to succeed in my academic life.
I asked students to tell me which phrasal verb from the list they could use in this sentence.
It was important for me to ___________ in my academic life. (get ahead)
I asked my students  if they knew all the verbs and told them that I was going to teach them a strategy to help them learn fast.

I gave each student a phrasal verb and asked them to illustrate it and write a similar story/sentence.
I took pictures of their drawings and sentences and used the projector to share everybody`s work. It`s was rewarding to observe that at this stage students were engaged, curious, and highly productive.

I put 9 images on a slide and projected it on the board. We played some games with this image.

1- Memory challenge -  I turned off the projector and they had to say the sentences by heart as if the images were still there.

2. Tic-tac-toe  - I projected 9 different phrasal verbs and  turned the projector off. I devided the students in two groups. Then, I drew nine squares on the board. Students had to choose a square and say the verb-story that was there.

3. Stop I showed them  their work once more and played some music. I told them to write as many phrasal verbs and sentences as they could. The student with more correct sentences would get a small prize.

4. Check progress - I asked students if the activities had helped them learn all the phrasal verbs and what other strategies they could use to help them learn more phrasal verbs.

Spicing up My Review Lesson - Phrasal Verbs 1

Advanced
integrated skill review lesson
Phrasal verbs
Ipads
App - Keynote
Internet Status -  offline  ;)
Number of devices required - 1 per pair

On Monday my advanced group will review phrasal verbs. Here goes my attempt to integrate the 5 skills and hopefully maximize brain activity and learning.

A lead in to help students connect
I`ll bring some food in paper bags and ask students to get in pairs. Student A will close his/her eyes and smell the bag. student B will write his partner`s guesses about what fruit is in each bag. Students who guess correctly get to take the bags home. Students have to agree on a smell to inspire a new ice-cream flavor.

Listening/speaking/writing/reading
Students listen to a student generated recording and write down words to help them rebuild the text on strips of paper.
Students get in pairs and put the strips in the order they are mentioned while listening again.
Students are shown the original text and compare.

Listening

Language practice
Students complete the gaps with phrasal verbs.

Students are given a problem to solve. They are told that they work for a company that produces ice-cream, and that it is about to go under. They desperately need to come up with a new flavor to win back customers. They discuss the following questions and are invited to get inspired by the scent of the food in the paper bags used in the lead in phase.

Technology
Write a similar text  on keynote and blank phrasal verbs using mobile devices (schools` or their own) to challenge their friends.

Self assessment
Students might record their campaign and engage in self-assessment of their oral production as a review for the oral test.

Did I sound natural?
Did I use phrasal verbs correctly?
Did I mispronounce any word?
How can I improve my work?

Uses of Thinglink in a Language Class - Phrasal Verbs

Illustrating Phrasal Verbs

Low intermediate +
Vocabulary Learning Strategies
Contextualizing or personalizing phrasal verbs
Thinglink
Ipad  - Optional
Camera
App - Educreations (free) - Optional
Internet Status; online

Instructions:
This is a good activity to make phrasal verbs more meaningful to students. After they deal with phrasal verbs, ask them to illustrate some that are trickier to remember. If students have Ipads, have them draw on educreations. If not, ask them to draw on a piece of paper. Take pictures and compile all the photos on thinglink. Have students find cool links to illustate the phrasal verbs even more.
TIP
When you upload the image to thinglink, have it open so that your students can tag the images from home.
In the following class, have a debriefing moment by exploring their work.
Extra practice
Play STOP!
Students see the image. Music is on and they have to write as many sentences as they can using the modal verbs depicted in the image. Music stops. Students with more/funniest/most creative sentences win.
