The Deadly Harrows - Storytelling - Conjunctions, Verb tenses

The latest Harry Potter movie is great. I specially liked the storytelling scene because it's a great material to explore in class. I usually have a lesson in which students hear, retell, analyze verb tenses, and write a story. This task is meant as extra practice and motivation booster.

A. Discuss in groups.
What kind of stories do you like?
What was the last story you read/ watched or heard about?
Are you a good story teller?
B. Watch the beginning of a story and tell tour partner what you know or what you think will happen next. Watch the whole story to check your predictions.
C. Complete with the correct form of the verbs.
___________ ( There to be) once threebrothers who _____________________ ( travel) along a lonely, winding road at twilight. However, these brothers were learned in the magical arts, and so they simply _____________(wave) their wands, and _____________________(make) a bridge appear across the treacherous water.
D. Read the story. Complete it with the conjunctions in the box. Watch the story once more and check your answers.

There were once three brothers who were travelling along a lonely, winding road at twilight. In time, the brothers reached a river too treacherous to pass. But being learned in the magical arts, the three brothers simply waved their wands and made a bridge appear across the treacherous water. Before they could pass, however, they found their path blocked by a hooded figure. It was Death and he felt cheated. Cheated because travelers would normally drown in the river. But Death was cunning. He pretended to congratulate the three brothers upon their magic, and said that each had earned a prize for being clever enough to evade him. The oldest brother asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. So Death fashioned him from the elder tree that stood nearby. The second brother decided he wanted to humiliate Death even further, and asked for the power to recall loved ones from Death. So Death plucked a stone from a river and offered it to him. Finally, Death turned to the third brother. A humble man, he asked for something that would enable him to go forth from that place without being followed by Death. And so it was that Death reluctantly gave him his own Cloak of Invisibility. The first brother travelled to a distant village where, with the Elder Wand in hand, he killed a wizard with whom he had once quarreled. Drunk with the power that the Elder Wand had given him he bragged his invincibility. But that night, another wizard stole the wand and slit the brother’s throat for good measure. And so Death took the first brother for his own. The second brother journeyed to his home where he took the stone and turned it thrice in hand. To his delight, the girl he’d once hoped to marry before her untimely death appeared before him. Soon she turned sad and cold, for she didn’t belong in the mortal world. Driven mad with hopeless longing, the second brother killed himself so as to join her. And so Death took the second brother. As for the third brother, Death searched for many years, but was never able to find him. Only when he had attained a great age did the brother finally took off the Cloak of Invisibility, and gave it to his son. He greeted Death as an old friend, went with him gladly, and, as equals, they departed this life.
