Second Conditionals - On A Desert Island

1. Discuss in groups.
What do you think about the outdoors?
Do you enjoy being around nature?
Are you a surviver? Would you be able to survive in the wilderness?

2. You have a puzzle to solve. In groups of three you have to agree on 5 things that would be wonderful to find if you were alone on a desert island. Prepare to say what you'd do with the items.

If I were on a desert island I would like to find a _________________ because I would use it to ____________________.

3. Watch the movie scene and check how many things you mentioned appear in the movie.

4. The character in the movie found many things that he could use to survive. Look at the list and try to guess what he is going to use each item for. Complete the sentences below.

Rollerblades - fabric - plastic - shoes - paper box
If I were him, I'd use the ___________ to ______________.

5. Watch the scene and check your guesses.

6. Leave a comment here telling your group what you'd take to the island and why or
record your voice on voki.com and add the link to the comment area to share with your group.

Hereafter Deductions- Past Modals Personalizing

I love movies that images linger with me and make me think. I believe my teen students also like powerful, interesting images to make our lessons more memorable and engaging. This lesson is about using the movie Hereafter to trigger students' drawing logical conclusions in a controlled framework and slowly scaffold to a more personalized freer practice on our facebook group.

1. What happened? Watch a movie scene and write as many sentences as you can to make guesses.

Must (not) have might (not) have may ( not ) have could ( not ) have

1. She______________________________________________________

2. _________________________________________________________

3. _________________________________________________________

4. Her husband_______________________________________________

5. _________________________________________________________

6. _________________________________________________________

7. The child__________________________________________________

8. _________________________________________________________

9. _________________________________________________________

Watch the scene of what actually happened and check your guesses.

1. Rewrite these sentences using a modal expression of speculation.

a) It’s not possible that she covered the story herself because she was very emotional.

b) It’s certain that she wanted to survive.

c) Maybe her husband forgot to buy the children's gifts.

d) It’s certain that her husband was terrified.

e) I’m positive that she never returned to the island.

Homework.

Think of a situation and write it down. Give it to another pair.Tell the group about the situation you got. Post it on our facebook group. Your friends will react on it there.

Somebody must have...

She must have been...

Example:

My daughter decided to travel by car with her boyfriend’s family.

I had mixed feelings, but after talking to his mom I decided to let her.

I called her many times, but her phone wasn’t ringing.

There’s no doubt that...

I’m positive that...

I supposed that...

She must have...

You must have...

Teaching Reported Speech to Teens

I have prepared many activities for practicing reported speech, but this time I was teaching a group of teens, and I wanted to bring a topic that would be interesting for them on its own. During this activity, students were super engaged and all of them had something to say.

1. Discuss the following questions in pairs.

Have you ever had a difficult conversation with your parents?
What would you tell a friend if she got pregnant? Why?
In the movie scene you’ll watch, the girl will tell her parents she is pregnant.
How will they react? How would your parents react?
Can a teenager girl raise a child? Why? Why not?

2. Write the following sentences in the direct speech. Watch the scene in which Juno breaks the news to her parents in a face to face conversation and check your answers.

She said she wasn’t really sure how she was gonna spit it out.
She said the school would contact the parents in the event of her expulsion.
Her friend said she thought it was best to just tell them.
She said she was pregnant.
She said she was gonna give it up for adoption.
She said she was really sorry.

3. Write a conversation you had with your parents in the reported speech and share with your partner. What does he/she think? Would his/her parents react the same way? Why? Why not? Who has had the most difficult conversation in class?

Past Modals and The Social Network

And all that could have been...
I was teaching my advanced group past modals when I realized they would need much more highly controlled practice before I moved on. I used The Social Network to catch their attention because this movie talks to them. Teens here in Brazil are into facebook, and they love this success story, since they are struggling to choose their careers.

Activity Type --- Controlled practice
Age group --- Older teens
Time --- 15 '
Materials --- Movie scene
Web2.o --- Facebook

1 - Discuss the following questions in pairs.

What do you think about facebook?
What are the most interesting features?
Why is it such a great success?
What must Mark Elliot Zuckerberg have done to come up with the idea of such a different site?
What could he have done differently to have a better site?
How can they improve the site?
How has this site affected people's lives?
How did he come up with the relationship status idea?

Watch the scene and complete the following sentences.

Mark __________________ invented facebook on his own. His friends were really helpful!

Facebook _____________been such a great success without relationship status.

Eduardo’s parents _______________been happier about his being a CEO at so young age.

Mark and Eduardo _____________been very happy about the great success their site was.
